MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH PINK (PART I)…

Growing up, I was never a girly girl who loved the color pink or played with Barbies. I was the little first grader who dutifully went to school with a perfectly combed ponytail and a new dress my mom picked for picture day, only to change into yellow Osh Kosh B’Gosh overalls, a denim patched printed shirt and put her hair down in her face right before the photographer said “CHEESE”!

While I will always be a tomboy at heart, I find myself gravitating towards prints with florals and even an occasional blush pink will make its way into my wardrobe. My small love affair with this color even made it’s way into my son’s room.

And lately, this new friend pink has caught my eye in several different ways. One of which was a book called Flora & The Flamingo by Molly Idle. The color scheme of this wordless picture book is predominantly are appropriately different shades of a flamingo’s feather and it has been one of my go to’s for gifts for kids. In a nutshell, it is an endearing story about a blossoming friendship between a graceful flamingo and a somewhat clumsy little girl. The beauty of the book is that it requires no words to richly describe the events taking place. It also leaves the child “reading” the book to create their own narrative. Or that is, the child in us…
